I am from Australia, and a common folktale around the south-east (I'm pretty sure victoria or sydney, one of the two.) Is a similar story Called "Fisher's Ghost". The story takes place in the 1800's when the english are finally settling and attempting to unite with the indigenous peoples. In 1826, a farmer from Campbell town nsw, named Frederick Fisher, went missing, and It's a long story, so i reccomend the wikipedia page for the legend, which has an annual festival with thousands attending.
